Responsible water recreation (REC) project

Research and workshops regarding water as part of the citizen science project!

In the summer, we started activities carried out using the citizen science method as part of the European City of Science Katowice 2024! The assumption of the ‘Responsible water recreation (REC)’ project was the identification of bathing areas, the ongoing assessment of the quality of their waters and air within recreation areas, the identification of beach pollution, and the recommendation of attractions accompanying recreation by the water.

As part of the initiative, three meetings were held at Silesian swimming areas, during which experimental research was carried out combined with air measurements, GPR measurements and workshops for children. The first meeting took place on 2 August in the Katowice Forest Park at the swimming area in the Valley of the Three Ponds, the second meeting took place on 9 August at the Morawa beach in Katowice-Szopienice, and the third meeting took place on 16 August at the Zalew Sosina in Jaworzno.

Throughout the events, surveys were conducted to assess the quality and availability of tourist services in the water areas. The information obtained served as an opinion on how the swimming areas were prepared for the summer season, and also allowed us to find out how often unguarded swimming areas in the Silesian Voivodeship are visited by the public.

More information about activities carried out using the citizen science method in Silesia around water-related issues can be found on the website of the University of Silesia.
